Company growth and transformation plans happen every year, with the goal to focus, guide, and direct the business for the coming years.  Among these is often the issue of ethics and another is sustainability; it should come as no surprise that these should be linked and reinforced as company priorities every year.  And no matter the company or industry, each has a need to embrace both practices for the betterment of their bottom line.

The value of sustainability for companies isn’t always about climate change or the finite resources available on the planet.  In many cases it comes down to economics – the choice to go greener works in favor of a better bottom line in the long term, and CFOs and economists have proven that out over time.  The least a company can do is strive to improve in their transformation plan, if not detail how they will meet goals that improve their business performance.

From this it can be concluded that the best business decision will mostly be to pivot to sustainable choices for a company.  To not do so means being a poor steward to the company, its shareholders, and employees.  Purely out of economic performance, sustainability becomes the business-ethical choice.

More broadly, the decision of a company to make sustainable choices leads to using less resources and energy as well as reducing carbon emissions.  It relates to our common future together, even if the company longer exists or the people are no longer involved directly.  Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future needs ends up being the start of many executive summaries on sustainability.

With resolutions like this set in the company direction, the teams involved in sustainability can then drive the goals from the top down to be part of how each group, sector, division, or team operates, from reducing resource and energy needs to sourcing sustainable materials.  Policy reaches into practices, education and outreach that goes beyond the company and employees to the customers, supply chains, and energy providers.  And even further beyond this are the generations to come, which will look back on this era and be able to understand whether their ancestors helped or hurt their own present and futures.
